I'm sure you'll all breath a sigh of relief, as will I, to know this is my last posting. Alas it finally happened. I was given the push and what a way to go, who says I have no style? Knowing the rumour mill that has probably already blamed me for murdering people, selling industrial secrets or infesting IDG with killer viruses I thought I'd just make a posting to kill off any further speculation. Hope it doesn't spoil the fun and feel free to use your over-active imaginations to embellish this as required.
After a brief, ill-informed, chat with Mr Hease last Thursday he finally got to the point and asked me if I'd be interested in fulfilling my career ambitions as part of the team putting web-world together. I responded that though I know a fair amount about the technology I don't know enough to be able to do the task he requires only enough to appreciate better than most the enormity of the task he's undertaken. Not being a man to take no for an answer, or listen to a well informed opinion depending on how you look at it, Richard suggested I sleep on it. I responded that there was no need and put forward some pretty forthright opinions about the viability of the idea due to the lack of organisation, infrastructure and skills that we face here. I was informed that he didn't expect to see me tomorrow and I'd be paid till the end of the month, I could barely believe that after months of effort, trying to get myself sacked it proved to be that easy.
I suppose I should have taken the job but it would have been fraudulent of me to claim that I could do it since my experience in the field is so thin and the skill set is a pretty tall order by any standards. I'm glad I didn't cos I suspect that it's the proverbial poisoned chalice. Whoever gets landed with it is going to have to bridge the gulf between the realities imposed by the current technology and Mr Hease's expectations and ambitions, a job I wouldn't wish on anyone.
Richard overlooked the fact that the current CD Powerplay disc was a day or two away from being finished, not a good time to get rid of me. Anyone with any sense would have waited until after I'd finished the CD or would have been well informed enough to at least know about the CD and minimise the disruption of such a measure. Richard's actions smack more of a five year olds temper tantrum than they do of a carefully considered approach to the day to day business of the company.
I offered to come back in and finish the disc since it isn't really fair for Rob or Adrian to be punished just because I don't see eye to eye with Richard. Rob certainly works far too hard on CDPP to have his efforts undermined in such a manner, something all too common here, a point I raised with Richard and so aptly demonstrated by his actions. I also quite like the idea of leaving things reasonably neat and tidy, a sad character trait but there you go.
So having obtained permission to return for a day or two I'll be finishing the current CD and vanishing into the sunset never to return. A prospect I'm sure you're all as happy about as I am.
I've had a great time, but it wasn't while I was here and I'm pretty sure the feeling is mutual.
So to many of you goodbye, to a few good luck and to the rest good riddance.
